Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised an sole daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. The dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, ended when she dropped out of school. After starting her career doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. In Roots' performance she came out as an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Also, she was an actor in her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was also the very first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
